Compound Launches on Unichain With New Collateral Options
Compound Finance has deployed its lending protocol on Unichain, the layer-2 network launched by the Uniswap ecosystem, opening borrowing markets that accept wstETH, weETH, ezETH, BTC, and UNI as collateral.
The launch was confirmed directly by Compound Finance on X, where the protocol announced the Unichain deployment and named the supported collateral assets. No additional parameters, interest rates, or borrowing caps were disclosed in the announcement, so users should verify current market terms inside the live application before depositing. The collateral assets available in the new markets
Three of the five assets are Ether-based liquid staking or restaking tokens. Wrapped staked ETH (wstETH) is the yield-bearing receipt token issued by Lido when users stake ETH. Wrapped eETH (weETH) represents a restaked position through ether.fi’s protocol, and ezETH is the liquid restaking token issued by Renzo. Using any of these as collateral lets a holder borrow against staked or restaked ETH exposure without redeeming the underlying position. The remaining two collateral types are BTC and UNI, Uniswap’s governance token. Including BTC gives Bitcoin holders a path to borrow on Unichain using a wrapped or bridged representation of their holdings. UNI’s inclusion is notable given that Unichain is the Uniswap ecosystem’s own network; it positions UNI holders as a natural primary user base for the new Compound deployment. In any Compound market, depositing collateral does not automatically generate yield or borrowing capacity at a fixed ratio. Collateral factors, liquidation thresholds, and borrow limits are set by governance and can change. The protocol’s liquidation mechanism will sell a borrower’s collateral if their position falls below the required health factor, so collateral volatility directly determines liquidation risk.
What the Unichain expansion means for Compound users
Unichain is a relatively recent addition to the layer-2 landscape, positioned as a home for Uniswap-native liquidity and applications. Compound deploying there extends the protocol’s multichain footprint and brings its established lending mechanics to users already active in the Uniswap ecosystem. This mirrors a broader pattern of DeFi protocols following liquidity to purpose-built chains, similar to how Ondo expanded its tokenized asset offering on Solana to meet users where activity was already concentrated.
For holders of wstETH, weETH, or ezETH specifically, the deployment offers a way to maintain staking or restaking yield while simultaneously borrowing stablecoins or other assets against those positions on Unichain. Whether the economics of that trade-off are favorable depends on prevailing borrow rates, which were not disclosed in the announcement and will fluctuate with supply and demand in the new markets.
Smart-contract risk is an additional consideration. Compound’s core contracts have a substantial audit and deployment history on Ethereum, but any new chain deployment introduces additional variables: bridge security, sequencer behavior, and the security properties of Unichain’s own infrastructure. Users interacting with the new markets are exposed to both Compound’s contract risk and Unichain’s network risk simultaneously.
The inclusion of UNI as collateral ties the deployment tightly to Uniswap governance participation. Large UNI holders who participate in governance votes now have the option to use those positions as collateral on a chain governed by the same ecosystem, without liquidating their governance stake. That structural alignment distinguishes this deployment from a generic multichain expansion. It is consistent with the direction other protocols have taken in building utility around their native tokens, a dynamic also visible in how JPMorgan’s JPM Coin deposit token on Ethereum tightened the loop between a token’s issuer and its utility layer.
Compound’s governance model means that the parameters governing these new Unichain markets, including collateral factors, liquidation incentives, and reserve factors, are subject to COMP token holder votes. Users should monitor governance proposals for any changes to risk parameters after launch, particularly in the early weeks when utilization and oracle behavior on a newer chain are still being established.
Anyone planning to deposit collateral or open a borrow position on the new Unichain deployment should consult the official Compound Finance channels for current market parameters and review the live application directly before committing funds.
